REPORT: Anthony Joshua to fight Kubrat Pulev in October

CARDIFF, WHALES — Coming off the most spectacular victory of his career, Anthony Joshua will return to the squared circle on October 28, as he faces off against Kubrat Pulev since capturing the WBA and IBO world heavyweight titles earlier his year.

Joshua, 27, was last in the ring this past April when he knocked out the veteran heavyweight, Wladimir Klitschko, in front of over 90,000 people at London’s Wembley Stadium. Both fighters each found themselves tasting the canvas at least once during this bout, but it was the younger Joshua that connected with a righthand uppercut that snapped the 41-year-old Klitschko’s head back, and signaled the beginning of the end.

With this historic win, Joshua added the (super world heavyweight) WBA and IBO world titles to his repertoire and will be defending all three of them for the first time next month, according to a Pulev FaceBook post.

“My preparations are very intense for the short time I have,” Pulev said in the (translated) social media posting, which also confirmed Cardiff as the venue. “I’ll be completely ready when I get in the ring. So he [Joshua] doesn’t stand a chance against me.”

Eddie Hearn of Matchroom Boxing, who promotes Joshua, tweeted out that an official release will be announced tomorrow, however, he did not confirm nor deny that Pulev is the selected opponent. In relation to the current state of the heavyweight division, Joshua is arguably looked at as the top fighter in the classification — especially after his triumph over a game Klitschko.

Ironically, Pulev’s only professional loss in his career was suffered at the hands of Klitschko back in 2014. But, since then, Pulev has won five contests in a row and created a potential opportunity to dethrone the new heavyweight king.
