Petrov Ananyan Survives a War and Stuns Subriel Matias

By Anthony “Stacks” Saldaña

In an absolute war from the opening bell Jr. Welterweights, Subriel Matias (15-1, 15 KOs) and Petros Ananyan (15-2-2, 7 KOs) fought a fan-friendly phone booth style fight landing hard heavy shots on each other before Ananyan landed a series of four unanswered punches in the 7th round staggering Matias and sending him falling back into the ropes. Referee Robert Byrd called it a knockdown and gave Matias a mandatory eight count. Matias survived the round and showed he was a game opponent in the later rounds. However, after 10 solid rounds of action, the knockdown proved to be the key factor in the fight as the judges scored the fight (95-94 twice and 96-93) all in favor of the twice beaten Petrov Ananyan who came into the fight a +1800 underdog.
