The highly anticipated press conference for Premiere Boxing Champions Showtime PPV event featuring undisputed super welterweight champion Saul “Canelo” Alvarez (59-2-2, 39 KOs) vs. undisputed junior middleweight champion Jermell “ Ironman” Charlo (35-1-1, 19 KOs) took place at the Wilshire Garden of the Beverly Hills Hilton in Los Angeles on August 16th 2023.
Despite the difference of fame and weight class status, Canelo and Charlo shared a mutual genuinity about them, along with the promise of a great fight. Canelo’s acclaimed trainer, Eddy Reynoso commented that he believes this is a good match up also stating that Team Canelo will, “continue to move forward and chase their dreams.”
Called upon first, ‘Iron Man’ Charlo wanted it known that he appreciates Canelo for the opportunity to fight a champion. Canelo, the Mexican super star, returned the compliment commenting on boxing fans confusion as to why he is fighting Jermell Charlo who will have to go up two weight classes instead of fighting his bigger twin brother Jermall Charlo stating that in his opinion, “Jermell is the tougher and better fighter.”
The sweltering heat of the garden did not dampen the mood of the two champions who were both well reserved and respectful throughout the conference. In a moment of reflection, Canelo candidly shared what he thought of his most recent performances, “I didn’t do my best in my last two fights, but I know why. This time you are going to see something different.” In an almost boyish eagerness, Charlo replied saying that he will also try something different following up with “I’m not little JC, I’m big JC. I’m not gonna overthink it, just have fun.”
The battle of the undisputed champions will take place at the T-Mobile Arena in Las Vegas on September 30th 2023 promoted by Tickets are now available through axs.com
