LONDON — Being out of the ring for just under two years, Amir Khan now has a return date after signing a new promotional deal with Eddie Hearn’s Matchroom Boxing.

In May of 2016, Khan, 31, suffered a knockout loss to Saul “Canelo” Alvarez in Las Vegas. Khan moved up to a catch-weight of 155 pounds in order to secure the bout against Alvarez, who is reportedly in talks for a rematch against Gennady Golovkin.

The deal with Matchroom is for three fights, with the first one being on April 21 at Liverpool’s Echo Arena with an opponent yet to be determined. Khan, a former unified super light weight world champion, will be fighting in the United Kingdom for the first time since 2013 when he fought Julio Diaz in Sheffield.

“I am delighted to welcome former unified World Champion Amir Khan to the Matchroom Boxing and Sky Sports Boxing team,” Hearn said in the press release. “Amir is one of the biggest names in the sport of boxing and his return on April 21 will be the first time he has boxed in the UK in seven years.

Hearn, who just recently entered the United States’ market with middleweight Daniel Jacobs as his first signee, says that Khan will be fighting again in August or September in preparation for a world title bout in winter of 2019. As of this writing, Errol Spence Jr., Keith Thurman and Australia’s Jeff Horn all hold the major world titles within the 147 pound division. Horn, who holds the WBO championship, is rumored to be fighting Terence Crawford sometime this year in a bout where Crawford would be the likely favorite.

Tickets for Khan’s return in April have yet to be released, however, an announcement is said to be soon, according to the release.

“I’ve been out of the ring for too long, and I’m desperate to make up for lost time, starting in April,” Khan said.
