Giovani Santillan Set to Defend His NABO Title Friday Night

By Anthony “Stacks” Saldaña

This Friday Thompson Boxing Promotions brings it fight series “Locked and Loaded” back to the Double Tree in Ontario, California. Headlining the action packed card is undefeated welterweight contender Giovani Santillan (23-0, 13 KO’s) as he enters the ring to defend his WBO/NABO Title against the once-beaten Alejandro Barboza (11-1, 7 KOs) of Jalisco, Mexico. Santillan who will be making the second defense of his title captured the NABO title last July when he took on and defeated the then undefeated prospect Sammy Valentin in front of Valentin’s home crowd. Now Friday night Santillan looks to keep his undefeated streak going when he takes on Barboza. “I’m happy to get the opportunity to get in there and defend my title. It took a lot of time and effort to get to this point and I’m not taking Barboza lightly. I look at this as a world title fight. That’s the mindset I have going in.” Stated Santillan. Like Santillan, Barboza also took on Valentin last December but his fight ended with completely different results as Barboza was stopped for the first time in his career. Santillan however isn’t taking barboza lightly and has a game plan. “The plan is to take control of the fight from the very beginning. Get to the body early to take away some of his strength and hopefully knock him out early. I want to win in a big way. Everyone is looking at me and seeing how I handle these fights so I have to take him out.” Growing up Santillan had an extensive amateur career, he began boxing at the young age of eight and in the amateurs fought for the Mexican Junior Olympic Team. Besides being an undefeated professional, Santillan the Southpaw was a sparing partner for seven weeks for Floyd Mayweather, Jr. before his fight with Manny Pacquiao. Santillan has also sparred with Timothy Bradley and Multi-division world champion Adrien Broner. Friday night Santillan looks to stay on track with a victory over Barboza and get one step closer to becoming a world champion. “It’s more motivation for me. I’m already self-motivated, but it gives me an extra boost. Every fight gets me closer to that world title shot. It’s a talented division so every win needs to stand out.” Stated Santillan.

In the co-main event of the night unbeaten bantamweight prospect and local Southern California fan favorite, Saul Sanchez (7-0, 4 KO’s) of Pacoima, California looks to test his skills against Sam Rodriguez (5-2, 3 KOs) of Orlando, Florida. Sanchez is managed by Steve Martini is coming off a solid six week training camp under the tutelage of Joel and Antonio Diaz and feels he’s both mentally and physically prepared for his upcoming bout. “I feel strong, and focused, we had a great camp” stated Sanchez. “I got world class sparring in Indio with the likes of Diego De La Hoya, and Francisco “El Bandido” Vargas. I’m in the best condition I’ve ever been in and I’m ready to come away victorious Friday night.”
