EL PASO, TEXAS — Saturday night at the Don Haskins Center, two former champions entered the ring in the hopes of once again becoming a contender in a stacked welterweight division as “Vicious” Victor Ortiz (32-6-2, 25 KO’s) battled Devon Alexander (27-4, 14 KO’s) in a 12-round WBC welterweight title eliminator main event bout televised live on Fox.

Both Ortiz and Alexander used the first round to feel each other out as Ortiz seemed to squeak out the round, but Alexander quickly answered back and began to beat Ortiz to the punch in the second and third landing a quick jab and catching Ortiz with precise two and three punch combinations. By the fifth round Alexander had taken complete control of the bout landing at will as the left eye of Ortiz had began to close due to the shear number of punches Alexander was landing.

Entering  the seventh Ortiz began fighting with a sense of urgency landing big shots of his own and taking the fight to Alexander providing solid back and forth action throughout the middle rounds. Ortiz continued to press Alexander in the championship round and after 12 solid rounds of boxing the scored the fight 115-113 Ortiz, and 114-114 (Twice) for a Majority Draw.

In the co-main event, undefeated Super Middleweight contender Caleb Plant (17-0, 10 KO’s) looked to edge one step closer to a world championship and grab the #2 ranking in the world when he battled the always tough Mexican veteran Rogelio “Porky” Medina (38-9, 32 KO’s). Plant used great boxing, a solid jab, and his speed to pick apart Medina from the opening bell. In the fourth round a frustrated Medina tried to cut off the ring but was never able to fully close the distance as Plant’s footwork and counter punching continued to help him pitch a shutout. Plant continued to stick to his game plan throughout the rest of the fight and after 12 lopsided rounds of boxing that had Porky Medina only landing 65 of 408 punches (16%) the judges scored the fight 120-108, 119-109 and 117-111 all in favor of Caleb Plant.
