First announced by The Rock, Canelo-GGG rematch set for May

LOS ANGELES — It what essentially came as no surprise and an event that was first publicized by actor Dwayne “The Rock” Johnson, Saul “Canelo” Alvarez and Gennady Golovkin will square off for the second time this upcoming Cinco de Mayo weekend.

No official announcement was made on the hosting city or venue, however, the T-Mobile Arena in Las Vegas, which hosted the first bout, has no event listed during that weekend. This could possibly indicate that the rematch will likely land there once again, especially since Golden Boy Promotions’ CEO and founder Oscar De La Hoya has been on record as saying that Las Vegas always hosts the biggest fights.

“This second fight is for the benefit and pleasure of all fans who desire to see the best fight the best,” Alvarez said in the press release. “This time,[Gennady] Golovkin won’t have any excuses regarding the judges because I’m coming to knock him out.”

Alvarez and Golovkin fought to a draw outcome in their first meeting back in September of 2017, and much controversy surrounded the official scorecards following the matchup. A majority of the boxing press gave the edge to Golovkin (38-0-1, 33 KOs), but others were satisfied with the draw decision. Either way, a rematch was seemingly warranted and each fighter has something to prove in the subsequent matchup.

“I didn’t agree with some of the judges’ decisions in the first fight,” Golovkin said. “This time there will be no doubt. I am leaving the ring as the middleweight champion of the world.”

In addition to Las Vegas, the city of Dallas has also been mentioned as a possible venue. Jerry Jones, who owns the Dallas Cowboys football team, has hosted fights in the past and has made his desire known to host this rematch. Nevertheless, the bout will likely land in Las Vegas once again pending an official announcement from Golden Boy Promotions.

Ticket information for the rematch should be released within the coming weeks.
