SOURCES: MIkey Garcia to fight Omar Figueroa Jr. in January

After a few months of noise involving a possible bout against IBF lightweight world champion Robert Easter Jr., Mikey Garcia will instead fight former world title holder Omar Figueroa Jr. on January 27.

In addition to Easter Jr. and Figueroa, names such as WBA lightweight world champion Jorge Linares and even the junior middleweight Miguel Cotto were mentioned as possible opponents. Garcia (37-0, 30 KOs) was reportedly close to a fight with Cotto, who is fighting the last bout of his career this upcoming Saturday on HBO, but Golden Boy Promotions (who’s promoting Cotto) and Garcia could not come to terms. Garcia even went as far as to share on social media that Golden Boy wanted a multi-fight deal in order for the Cotto fight to happen, and he [Garcia] only wanted to do one fight at a time. Golden Boy then reportedly adhered to the one fight terms, but Garcia chose to go another direction.

Figueroa (27-0-1, 19 KOs) was the final of two options for Garcia, with the other being Easter Jr. in what could have been a potential unification matchup. Figueroa is coming off the most prominent victory of his career as he defeated former world champion Robert Guerrero earlier this year in TKO fashion. The 29-year-old Garcia currently holds the 135 pound WBC world title and is coming off wins over Dejan Zlatičanin and Adrien Broner.

As of this writing, an official venue is not known, but sources tell Supreme Boxing the host city will likely be New York once an official announcement is developed and distributed. This will mark the second consecutive time that Garcia will fight in the empire state, as the Broner fight also emanated from New York.
