Anthony Joshua Stops Carlos Takam

By Anthony “Stacks” Saldaña

Saturday evening in Cardiff, Wales in front of an estimated 80,000 roaring fans, the WBA, IBF World Champion and British superstar Anthony Joshua (20-0, 20 KOs) took on and easily defeated his short notice replacement Carlos Takam (35-3-1, 27 KOs). From the onset of the bout Joshua used his reach and sheer power to outbox and hurt his opponent. Joshua used his solid jab to keep Takam at bay, but in the second it was a frustrated Takam who came in leading with his head. Takam caught Joshua with a head butt leaving the champ bleeding from the nose. Then in the fourth Joshua began landing a string of hard combinations cutting Takam over the left eye. Takam bothered by the cut seemed to have stopped fighting when Joshua landed a heavy left hook dropping Takam at the end of the round. Takam beat the count, and fought a tough battle as throughout the fight Takam never could find a way to get inside on the much taller Joshua. In the tenth Joshua began unloading heavy unanswered shots on Takam forcing the referee to call a halt to the bout at 1:34 mark of the round. After the fight Joshua stated “Listen I come to fight I don’t sit on the edge and make decisions, I have no interest on what’s going on with the officials that’s not my job. But I think the fans want to see Takam out on crutches. Stated Joshua, then went on to ask what the fans want. “What do people want, the fight between Wilder and I has to happen. So in this situation I would have to vacate my belt and everyone saw how hard I had to work to get these, so I’m not just going to give them up for anyone. I’m going to fight keep them and move on”
