By Anthony “Stacks” Saldaña

Friday night at the Double Tree Hotel in Ontario, California, Thompson Boxing Promotions brings fight fans another edition of its “New Blood” fight series. HeadliningFriday nights action is Southern California fan favorite, Jose “El Gato” Roman (24-1-1, 16 KOs) of Garden Grove, as he puts his 10-fight win streak on the line against Wilberth Lopez (18-8, 13 KOs) of Tucson, Arizona, in a scheduled 8-round junior welterweight bout. Roman who has come up through Thompson Boxing, has previously sparred against world champion stablemates Ruslan Provodnikov and Tim Bradley, and in his last bout in July Roman easily defeated tough Mexican Veteran Miguel Mendoza by unanimous decision. With a victory Friday night Roman will look to continue to climb the ranks of the junior welterweight division. “I feel great going into next week’s fight,” Roman said. “I’m coming off a win in July and look forward to extending my winning streak against Lopez.”

Lopez, on the other hand, will aim to get back on the winning track after suffering a unanimous decision loss against unbeaten, world ranked challenger Alex “El Cholo” Saucedo in May.

In the Co-Main event undefeated welterweight Juan Ruiz (19-0, 12 KOs) of Venezuela will take on Mexico’s Erick Martinez (13-8-1, 7 KOs) in a fight set for 8-rounds. Ruiz who made his Thompson Boxing and U.S debut last October and came away with a victory over Wilberth Lopez will now will take on Martinez his toughest opponent to date. The upset minded Martinez is no stranger to tough opposition and has been in the ring with the likes of Ivan Redkach, Min Wook Kim, and Roberto Manzanarez to name a few.

Also on the card undefeated featherweight prospect Ruben Villa (7-0, 4 KO’s) of Salinas, California will face Ernesto Guerrero (26-19, 18 KO’s) of Mexico in a fight set for 6-rounds. Villa, a talented southpaw who had a stellar amateur career will enter the next phase of his professional career as he battles Guerrero a tough veteran who has gone toe to toe with undefeated NABF Bantamweight Champion Oscar Negrete and former World Champion Giovani Segura. “I welcome the challenge,” said Villa, who is co-promoted by Thompson Boxing and Banner Promotions. “As a young boxer, you need these types of experiences so you can measure your progress.”

Friday night Thompson Boxing Promotions will also showcase another highly touted prospect as junior lightweight Michael Dutchover (5-0, 4 KO’s) of Midland, Texas enters the ring against Carlos Flores (4-5-1, 3 KO’s) of Mexico in a 6-round scrap. Dutchover went the distance for the first time as a professional in his last fight against Miguel Carrizoza. Friday night, the Texas native, who has relocated to the Los Angeles area, and has sparred with Darleys Perez, Peter Petrov and Ruben Villa plans to start a new knockout win streak. “You never go searching for a knockout, but that is always the goal in any fight,” Dutchover said. “The less work and less punishment you endure, the better you are for it.”

Rounding out the five-bout card is Ruben Torres (1-0, 1 KO) of Santa Monica, California. Torres made his professional debut on a Thompson Boxing card in August and now the 19-year old will take on Devin Parker (2-10) of New Orleans, Louisiana in a 4-round lightweight bout.
