Tonight David Benavidez became the youngest Super Middleweight Champion in the history of boxing, capturing the WBC Super Middleweight World Title with a victory over Ronald Gavril at the Joint in Las Vegas, Nevada.

Both fighters stood toe to toe for twelve solid rounds of boxing; though Benavidez started strong and controlled much of the fight, Gavril landed a solid left hook in the twelfth round that sent Benavidez to the canvas leaving the crowd in suspense as they waited for the final scorecards that read 116-111 (Benavidez), 116-111 (Gavril), 117-111 (Benavidez) giving Benavidez the split decision victory.

“I started off to see if I could knock him out to see how strong his chin was. This is my first 12 round fight and I hurt him in the last four rounds and I was thinking to myself I want to close this…I want to close this but it came back to bite me in the ass I got a little reckless and I got knocked down my hats off to him maybe will get fight of the year!” Said David after tonight’s historic win.
